Massive three points but hope the rest of the season is not like the last 25 minutes - don't think my nerves could take it. Pratley immense again, must be in with a big shout for player of the year. Cullen and Green mightily impressive and thought Andre might have had a penalty near the end if he had gone down as he cut across the box - am sure the Barnsley defender caught him. Phillips made a couple of magnificent saves, with the first one having a touch of the Pele/Banks about it. Add in the impressive contributions of Taylor, Williams and Matthews and I just wonder if it's a Charlton thing where fans have to go through the wringer in the closing stages of a game.
The stats will say Barnsley were the "better" team.
Except the one stat that actually matters; goals scored.
Barnsley should have been down to ten men as they kicked our players, usually Williams, in the first half. Great save by Philips but we were on top.
We lost all our shape when Williams went off. Then Taylor being protected blunted our attack and we were under the cosh.
I like Hemed, he did some good stuff but he's no Taylor.
Don't think Cullen or JFC had good games but Pratley did. Did you see that volleyed cross field pass?
Green was my man of the match.
Not the smooth machine we were earlier in the season but much better and took the three points which is what matters.
Exactly this. And specifically Sollbauer. Booked on 22. Then spoken to for another bad tackle. And then, another one. Terry Smith on Valley Pass was doing his nut about it. Sollbauer had to go for the third one if it was a "speaking to" foul.
This is what winds reasonable fans up about refs. They are human and can miss things. It's when they have the time to make decisions, and then those decisions seem to defy logic and the rules of the game, that we become frustrated with them.
Three points is all that really mattered today, so delighted with the win. But having bossed the first half we went into neutral in the second and were lucky not to get pegged back. Other quick thoughts:
- a wonderful save from Dillon in the first half, reminiscent of the great Gordon banks save against Pele in the 1970 world cup. - Alfie did some great work today but needs to learn, and quickly, to get his head up and pass or cross the ball. He missed opportunities to do so several times today. - Darren Pratley needs a rest. He was running on fumes for the last 20 minutes. - Great to see the ground and surrounding streets so busy again.
Let's hope that this long awaited win is the start of a mini-run that will take us up the table and banish the prospect of relegation.
On a positive note our set pieces were much better than before (other than one horrendous short one, which could have cost us a goal or last man red card), the delivery was good and in the first half we looked dangerous from just about every one of them, whether by Cullen or Doughty. Not sure why JFC took one of our later set pieces, as it was poor by comparison
And our throws were MUCH better, a couple of brilliant throws by Matthews into space for Pratley to run on to.
I think you lot are right about me ight & I must be wound differently as I saw it differently to most of you.
Didnt think Green did much for the first 45 mins & then he scored. Was better in the 2nd but think Leko was more dangerous & direct with the ball.
Dont always get the man love for LB.....I reckon he's got a bet on us to go down as those subs meant we nearly threw it away. I wonder now if some of you get why some of us we were screaming out to sign a striker.....bringing Hemed on effectively made us a 10 man team & from that moment on we couldnt hold the ball up top.
Also Mcgeady would have been a better player to bring on for Williams or even Field. And wtf did being on Purrington do...? With no Taylor, Dougherty is probably our best outlet. Stick him up front for the last 10 mins & let him chase clearances if you must "shore up" the defence.
Fitness of our crocks is getting there. Once we have all our players available, Bowyer needs to find his best 11. Those 11 should give most sides a good game. My one worry is that defence. Why oh why we didn’t bring in a cb is beyond me.
Snuck that one, poor substitutions but guess they needed to rest/not risk Taylor & Williams.
Dillon had a good game with some important saves, but Pratley for me is fast becoming POTY, the mans a machine and at 34 puts other players in the shade.
Taylor took his poachers goal well and Greene properly spanked his, really pleased for the lad especially after his sad news this week.

I respect that you have that opinion, but I do honestly wonder why you bother turning up when you seem so dour about everything.
Green has scored 2 goals, and has looked impressive in attack, in the limited time he has played!
Hemed did well enough when he came on, and nearly created a couple of chances, but was difficult for him as we basically sat in our own final third.
And claiming we should 'stick Doughty up top and chase some balls' shows why you are not a football manager.
People keep digging the defence out but if our midfield can't retain possession and can't get out of their own half then our defenders will be under constant pressure. Too easy to lay all the blame on our defence.
As a side note I thought Woodrow and Thomas for them both looked excellent. Hopefully two we look at in the summer.. may be available on the cheap if they go down.
Thank god for that result. Watched the match in the West Stand with a Barnsley fan and he was pretty troubled by what he saw, which is understandable. I think it's all been said already but we weren't particularly brilliant all game, but we deserved the win. First half we were clearly the better team, but mostly because Barnsley weren't present. Williams controlled the game with his running and constantly getting fouled, and with him driving the ball up the pitch Green and Taylor were able to run at their defenders. Once we replaced Williams with JFC things fell apart and their number 14 started running the game. I know JFC is just back from injury but he was a real liability today and he offered so much less than Williams both going forward and defensively. Jonny ran back and made a sliding tackle at right back; JFC got in other defenders' ways and missed tackles. I'm glad Field and Davis are ready for next game because JFC wasn't it today. I think I'd rather we'd brought on McGeady or Oztumer to drive the ball up the pitch instead. Taylor going off also damaged us, but Hemed showed glimpses of class on the ball, and he would have benefited from having Williams behind him instead. Doughty was pacy as usual but held onto the ball too long every time and gave up chance. Green was excellent and looked like a physically stronger version of Leko today with the same blistering pace, so that bodes well. Naby was calm and composed all game and Pratley was his usual self. Cullen really does change how we play and he was similarly superb when he was able to get his foot on the ball; Mowatt could do with taking a cue from Cullen on how to impose yourself on a game without the ball as well as with it. At the time I thought Dillon should have done better with their goal but I haven't seen it since so I could be wrong. Solbauer should have been sent off for them after he kicked through Lyle's knee having already been warned after a yellow, but the ref didn't fancy that which was unfair on us, but we managed anyway.
The main thing was it was nice to see 11 first teamers out there, and then see 3 first team players come on. Another day we might have been able to bring on other players instead of having three forced subs but assuming we don't have any more unwelcome injuries that's what we should see for the rest of the season. We can do this.
PWR. Delighted with the 3 points. Very much in control until we made our subs then completely lost control of the midfield and it was largely Barnsley until the end. They'll definitely feel they'll have deserved at least a point based on chances but couldn't care less.
Think everyone put in a shift. Only player I felt was a bit off it was Green but still a great finish for his goal.
Thank god refs rarely enforce the 6 second law as Dillon was taking the piss today.
We rode our luck at times and Phillips pulled off a worldie of a save. On the other side of the coin, their number 18 should have been sent off for two yellows, but the ref bottled it (it may not have helped, as it normally does not with us). Don't think that JFC did as bad as some have said, although I would have thought that Ozzy was the better option, but Hemed was awful again and offers nothing. When he replaced Lyle we stopped defending from the front and Barnsley took over. Disappointed with Alfie today, as he twice failed to play Andre Green in when it was on. He really needs to lift his head when bombing forward. Pratley was immense and I think that without him we would have lost. Lyle Taylor showed today why it was so important to keep him. If he stays fit then I have no doubt that we will move up the table.
Mixed emotions. Elation at the result which in a sense was all that mattered today. But huge frustration at a lamentable second half display. We were truly awful and should have lost that. Why oh why do we persist in sitting deep as soon as we get ahead in a game? I’m getting truly fed up going to games at the Valley and feeling like we are the away side. We could get away with that in league 1 but not in the championship. Barnsley are a poor side but we treated them like Liverpool. Excellent individual displays from four or five of our lads but poor substitutions and a poor team set up nearly cost us. Took the edge of the win for me.
I have to have a moan about our timewasting today. First of all why do we slow the tempo down when we go one up at home then again after the second? Sometimes I feel it ruins our momentum and Barnsley must have smelt blood when they see us running down the clock with a half of football yet to go. We had a decent first half yet the second half we didn’t really get going and one of the few chances we had when Pratley should have had a go himself instead of sending a poor ball out wide to Doughty. Williams must have chunks missing from his legs the way his was targeted today and how Sollbeaur didn’t get a second yellow is beyond me. Glad to see Jake get some more minutes too. And a special mention for Andre Green who looks like a handful and to Philips for a world class save early on.
Decent if disjointed first half performance against a poor Barnsley side but the second half was worryingly inept. Barnsley were able to find space between our midfield and defence far too often and we were lucky to scrape home with the win. Hopefully we kick on as key players regain match fitness but if not at least Bow now has options available to change things up.

We ended up with a back 5 and overrun in midfield as a result. I would have taken off Sarr instead of Doughty, to bring on an extra midfielder or put Purrington at LB and Doughty in LM.
We were better than Barnsley 1st half without being much good ourselves.
They were better than us 2nd half, when only good defending stopped us blowing it.
Not a single shot anywhere near the goal 2nd half and pretty sure our only two decent efforts were the goals.
We've scored two goals from set pieces (both after winning the 1st ball) but the rest of our free kicks were awful. Doughty has to be kept away from the direct free kicks and let Sarr have a crack.
Green's finish was excellent and Taylor looked good. Matthews and Pratley were classy. Phillips saved well and wasted so much time. Barnsley had every right to be annoyed with that.

“It could’ve been worse"
Yes it's his cautious nature, and ambition, but I'm sure he hoped for better (and probably another striker)

still believe that we are much better with a flat back 4

Of course there are two teams on the pitch and inevitably Barnsley came out and gave it a go and made to look all the better by our tiring players.
Bowyer said, they changed their formation to match ours, why didn’t we change ours to counter that, or did we? Nevertheless a grateful 3pts.
Surprised no fanfare for HE and no songs either? We could of at least sang, Tahnoon’s Red and White Army, if nothing else?
