Taking off Taylor/Williams/Doughty and replacing them with Hemed/Forster-Caskey/Purrington might be the most unispiring trio of substitutions I’ve seen in a Charlton winning performance.
Thank god refs rarely enforce the 6 second law as Dillon was taking the piss today.
I had a look at a Referee's Forum to get an idea how refs deal with it. One ref posted:
"I'm quite tolerant on this - always glad of a little breather for myself!
I won't even consider that the clock is ticking until I've got myself into the position I want to be in. Then, if he's taking his time, I'll give him a shout get on with it. Normally does the trick."
Made me smile. But got me wondering, we rarely think like a referee thinks.

I think that they all needed replacing, the first two to protect them for the future and Doughty because he wasn't offering much defensively. I would never bring on Hemed because I don't see what he offers (I'd much rather have Josh Davison on the bench) . We could possibly have gone one up front when Taylor went off but that might have been unfair to Andre Green.
My thoughts, huge win obviously. Rode our luck but I don't care when we are in a relegation scrap how ugly the points are. Lee needs to look at that game and work on it though, that's undoubtedly the second worst side in the league and they made us look like sh*t in those last 35 mins or so. All their managers subs and tactics were spot on, Lee's were not today. Saved by the woodwork and some brilliant Phillips goalkeeping.
Locks was solid, Naby played good as expected against soon to be league 1 opposition, Pearce is just meh, always looks like he is panicking to me but good at winning headers so there's that. Doughty showed his rawness today, lost the ball once or twice in terrible places, Matthews is quality, want him long term. Cullen isn't ready but was still our best mid, Williams good performance as per, we looked crap when he came off, Pratley I love him for his effort but we need better, although he is great at putting himself about his lack of pace and chasing shadows is why he is always having to make worldly tackles, JFC looked poo when he came on not ready, really liked Green, put himself about and chased down plus the goal, Taylor is just unreal, we should just offer him silly money to stay. Without him we look a completely different side. Lastly obviously Hemed, can't fault his effort but he just looks a donkey sorry, looking forward to Bonne coming back.
A note on one of their players Luke Thomas, little one with no number on his shirt. Absolutely quality, ripped us to shreds, would love to see his pass stats that game, seemed like all the play came through him and all his passes found a black shirt. Hopefully Lee noted him down and we take a look, only 20 and looked ridiculously composed, we don't have anyone with that sort of cutting pass quality.
Big shout out to @MartinCAFC for the ticket, top man. And to whoever the two lads were right at the back north right upper if you post on here, one had his daughter with him. Proper sound guys.
Phillips was excellent. His save in the first half was unbelievable and he has quickly learnt the art of time wasting by laying on the ground with the ball.
Matthews was solid and gave us an attacking threat down the right in the first half. As things stand, Solly’s got a job on his hands getting back into the team.
Lockyer was good again, dominant in the air which is nice to see. He needs to watch it at times as he’s very hands on and it can cost us, especially when he’s next to Pearce, both of them are like it.
Pearce lead and controlled the defence well, was actually slightly at fault for their goal, but he puts his body on the line and assisted Lyle’s goal, overall a decent performance.
Sarr, and this may be controversial but I thought he had a good game. Yes he badly mistimed a challenge in the second half which he was lucky to not get a yellow for. Overall he was very good first half and a big reason for our dominance before half time. Had to cover Doughty at times as well.
Doughty needs to not be so hard on himself. He was shattered with 20 minutes to go as he had been up and down that left hand side all day. He could’ve played Green in a few times but decided to get his head down and run, that will come with experience. Not his best game, but he done okay.
Cullen I thought didn’t actually play too well. He lost balance quite regularly and didn’t anticipate the weight and timing of pass as well as he usually does. But that’s down to the very high standards he has set. Even when he has an off day, he is still good enough.
Pratley was excellent, really using his experience well and was everywhere, covering the defence whilst also being the furthest man forward at times too. Important he’s available for next week.
Williams was being kicked left, right and centre first half but he has so much quality, and adds that magic spark to the team. In tight spaces he’s phenomenal. We lost control when he and Taylor came off.
Taylor showed everyone exactly why we couldn’t afford to lose him and what he brings to the team, even when he’s got to catch up on a lot of fitness. Took his goal very well and caused them problems. There’s definitely a partnership with Green in the making, and that’s exciting for the rest of the season.
Green was fantastic all game. So pleased for him to have scored, especially after the week he’s had. His control on the ball is very good and looks more natural than say Leko, but they’re different players. Green worked hard, was clever, got into some very good positions, produced some excellent runs off the ball to find exploitive space. For me he was my man of the match.
Forster-Caskey is a different player to Williams and was given different instructions to what Williams would do. He was brought on to change shape a little and help cover the right hand side. I actually thought he done well, and was in the right place to clear one off the line. He also was a little unlucky he didn’t control the throw better as he would’ve been in and could’ve put the game to bed.
Hemed worked hard when he came on, was strong and run the channels well too. He was unlucky not to get on the end of Green’s cross and also could’ve picked out a man better when he pulled it back. He’s not Taylor, but he’s a very good player to have in the squad.
Purrington probably should’ve come on for Doughty a little earlier due to how tired he was getting. Didn’t do anything wrong when he came on and can only say he helped us over the line. No problem with that change for me.
Performance wise should’ve been a lot better and more convincing in the second half. Barnsley were unlucky to have hit the woodwork 3 times in one game, had one cleared off the line, and a great save by Phillips. However, first half we were good and controlled the game without ever looking amazing.
With another full week of training and new players coming in and being available, as well as the one’s back from injury improving fitness too, we will only get better and stronger. It’ll be interesting to see who drops out the squad when we have more available to us. Bowyer’s going to have some tough decisions to make.
Such a shame Cullen couldn’t direct that diving header better. I might a creamed my pants if that went in, would’ve been a stunning goal.
Ewwww ..... you could have spared us all the mental image.
Sorry Oggy, but that moment had me up out of my arm chair, forgetting about my hangover, and I nearly dropped my baby daughter who was napping on me.
Of all the spectacles in football I think the one I love the most is when a midfielder starts an attack and then arrives late to meet a cross and thump home a header. I don’t know why, I’ve just always found it spectacular.
Was gutted it didn’t go in for Cullen.
I like it better when he arrives on time!
The epitome of that was Kinsella in the 4-2 win away at Walsall (or possibly the 5-2 win at Grimsby) the year we won the title under Curbishley.
Think we learnt a lot from this game and ironically how the last 25 mins played out may benefit us in the coming weeks as it will force Bowyer away from using those subs again. Can’t see JFC featuring again for a long while - surely needs time in the U23s like Aneke to build up fitness.
Stoke 100pc is a ‘must not lose’ game as opposed to the must win game yesterday. As such can see Davis coming in for this one - possibly at the expense of Doughty although his pace can be a good outlet on the counter I think experience will be key there. Then Taylor with Green and Williams off him, with McGeady the change to make around 75 when Williams tires, and if Taylor is hanging I would rather throw Aneke on.
Huge result. Shame about Leeds doing their usual bottle job against Wigan.
However, it's always nice to Leeds come unstuck. Us staying up and Leeds staying down would be a nice end to the season.
I must be the only one who wants Leeds to go up. Another failure for them will almost certainly see Bielsa on his way, and Bowyer the clear favourite to be their next manager.
Don't think there is an official stat for this, but Williams must be the most consistently fouled player in the Championship. Not so much a marked man, more a target for opposition players to practice their agricultural skills on.

Are all the fouls deliberate or just clumsy defending? Lost count of the number of times he got taken down yesterday.

It's not really.
We have 7 games left at home and 9 away. Currently on 33 points, if we say we need 50 to be safe, then we need another 6 wins to get past that.
Obviously it'll be good to pick up points away, but if we keep winning at home then we'll be fine.

We won’t stay up if we don’t pick up some points away - which we are more than capable of doing. Likewise - it’s not realistic for us to expect to be faultless at home. Main thing for me is we perform in the cup final 6 pointers of which this is one of .

I'd say at least a third of them aren't even fouls. Don't forget he was at the same midfield academy as Zaha.
The worst tackle on him yesterday and the only one I saw that actually hurt him, was when Cullen caught his ankle.
Great 3 points that. Very important win. Still think we can achieve mid table tho season and that will be a success. Difference Cullen, Taylor and Williams make is significant in the championship. If we can get something at stoke then we can really push on. Great support again. Really pleased for Green
If only we could sort out this tendency to go all defensive and time wasting-y when leading I’d be a much happier bunny. It’s not all about players tiring you know.

It was Walsall away. Stood in the home end for that one.
The Cullen header wouldve been up there with Paul Davis for Arsenal v Charlton in the 2-2 draw......had it not been 15 feet wide!!
Hemed is obviously this season's marmite player. I really like him, he's strong in the air and is a nuisance for defenders. He's improved game by game since his injury and just needs a goal I feel. Similar to Josh Parker last season.
I think Bowyer is a really good manager but I thought he nearly lost the game for us, when will he learn that we dont have the defenders to hold on to games, - i Believe we have lost 17 points this seson from winning positions , as he will insist on taking off attacking players and bringing on defending players when we are hanging on - we need attacking players to take the pressure off the defence, as our defenders are not up too defending for long periods
We got the result we needed, it was not pretty in the second half and Barnsley could have snatched a draw. fortunately they did not. awful moments of comedy panic after LT and JW came off.
We will have to play a lot better especially in midfield when we travel to Stoke next week, or we could suffer.
i am Certain LB has a tactical plan. Come on you Reds !!
